The Piedmont Wine Region

Whether the treasures you seek are natural, cultural or gastronomic - Piedmont has them all. Piedmont's scenery is fabulous and highly varied: it has mountains in the north and west, rice paddies in the flood plain that runs along its centre, and vineyards on the gentle hills in the south.

Piedmont has ski resorts, Savoy castles and picturesque hilltop villages. It is without doubt the epicentre of Italian food and wine. Every weekend gourmets from Milan and Turin descend on the South Piedmont countryside to sample the culinary delights on offer.

The Piedmont wine region is roughly bounded by the four towns of Alba, Asti, Alessandria and Acqui Terme.

The scenic hilltop village of San Marzano Oliveto (pictured right), where Cascina La Famo is located, lies at the heart of this zone.

It's also an ideal base for exploring the area: Portofino, the Cinque Terre and the Italian Riviera to the south, and Lake Maggiore to the north, are all an easy day trip away.

Piedmont boasts a rich selection of festivals right around the year - among them Ivrea's Battle of Oranges; the Chocolate Festival and Slowfood's Salone del Gusto (Salon of Taste) in Turin; Bra's Cheese Festival; and the Palio of Asti - a festival of medieval origin that includes a famous bareback horse race.

Peak season for gourmets is the autumn - culminating in Alba's White Truffle Fair in October.

The wine region of South Piedmont is also easy to reach: the airports of Turin, Genoa and Milan are no more than an hour and a half away by car.

Fast French TGV trains run 3 or 4 times every day between Paris and Turin: you can leave London on the Eurostar service in the morning, and be in the Piedmont wine region in time for dinner.

We look forward to seeing you in Piedmont soon!
